Multicomponent functionalization of π-systems incorporating CO2 (WP2)
Host institution: University of Zurich (UZH), Switzerland
Application Deadline: 31st May 2020
3 PhD year position. Expected start date: Mid 2020.
Remember to read the eligibility criteria here.
Objectives:
- Develop a non-precious homogeneous catalytic process for the efficient synthesis of heterocycles using atmospheric CO2 and readily available π-systems as starting materials
- Acquire in depth mechanistic understanding on these transformations
- Evaluate chiral ligands and Lewis acids for enantioselective formation of heterocycles from CO2.
- Immobilize catalysts for an improved performance
Expected results:
- Reliable catalytic system for the synthesis of highly functionalized CO2-containing heterocycles from π-systems (alkenes/allenes/alkynes)
- Mechanistic understanding via kinetic studies and calculations unravelling the relevant steps along the catalytic cycle of these multicomponent reactions (with ESR8)
- Improved catalytic performance upon catalyst immobilization
Planned secondments:
- SU to Prof. Martín-Matute (3 months): Synthesis and evaluation of catalytic activity for immobilized MOF-supported catalysts (with ESR3).
- Industrial secondment to HT, Dr. Taarning (2 months): Industrial catalyst implementation and insights into heterogeneous zeolite chemistry.
Enrolment in Doctoral degree(s): University of Zurich, Switzerland
